So what equipment do I use and what’s in my camera bag that I take to car shows?
Well, I have two DLSR camera bodies, along with many different lenses but the ones below I wouldn’t be without.
A good place to look for these bodies is on e-Bay and Amazon clicking the images of the cameras will take to directly to Amazon.co.uk
1 x Canon 5d mkii. This was my 1st camera body. I jumped into purchasing a high-end DSLR once I decided I was enjoying what I was doing with a compact. I knew I had to up the stakes from using a compact camera with a fixed lens to using a DSLR with some expensive glass.
This is now my backup body just incase my 5d mkiii was to go awol on me.
I also have a canon compact that will shoot in RAW just in case both bodies pack up on me. I have in the past just as an experiment shot a full show report on my compact for my blog.
1 x Canon 5d mkiii. this is my primary body now, it gives me the results I want and I am a huge fan of this camera.
Yes there are now advances in the Canon range of cameras but, I know this camera and its settings inside out and I find is very easy to use.
I got told a long time ago by a few professional photographers about getting to know your equipment. It has taken me a few good years to be able to use this camera body without having to look at the instruction booklet.
The Canon 24 -105mm lens is a must for any Automotive Photographer. It is my go-to lens while at a car show.
It can do a multitude of functions because it is so diverse in being a zoom lens at the top of its scale and then so efficient at taking close-up pictures or “detailed work” when required and the lower end.
Often I will see a car in action or a shoot-through opportunity (shooting the subject between two other objects) and this lens allows me to capture what I am looking at with ease. In some respects, this lens can make you lazy because it is so versatile.
My lens has been knocked about, dropped, and been in some really wet and windy conditions. It has certainly stood the test of time and it’s worth investing the money in “good glass”.
In today’s modern society you are able to buy conversion rings for your DSLR so if you do change your camera body you can still use the lens. Some may not be able to use the autofocus function but technology is improving day by day.
New to my collection is the beautiful Leica SL. and the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH. A full-framed 24-megapixel mirrorless camera. The build quality of this German camera is second to none.
